An audio engineer must have solid technical skills, understand the process of capturing sound, and know how to use advanced software such as ProTools, Ableton, and Luna, to name a few. Being able to recognize good sounds through listening and having the ability to solve problems quickly is also essential. When creating a mix, engineers must be capable of blending together multiple elements to create one cohesive sound.

Audio engineering also involves editing and mastering audio. During the editing process, audio engineers can manipulate sounds using various effects, filters, and levels. Audio engineers must also ensure the recording sounds balanced and captures the intended sound. Mastering involves creating a polished mix that is suitable for release. This includes adjusting the sound levels, adding compression, and making sure that the sound is consistent across multiple formats to compete in today's market.
